Martin’s career started in Canada, where she worked for the comedic group “The Young and the Useless.” She performed stand-up comedy and ran the box office at The Second City comedy club. At age 16, Martin was the youngest Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award nominee ever. Martin has contributed writing to the Canadian sketch comedy program Baroness von Sketch Show. Martin relocated to London in 2011 in search of a new beginning, fell in love with the city, and first worked at dead-end jobs before deciding to concentrate on breaking into British comedy.
Her 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival production, Mae Martin: Us, served as the inspiration for the BBC Radio 4 programme Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Sexuality.
